How Can You Claim That There is Only One Way to God?

By Colleen Donahue

When a Christian states that there is only one way to God – through Jesus—they are sharing what Jesus himself told his followers. He said to them, “I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.” John 14:6

Far from being exclusive or arrogant, Jesus wanted to make it clear about the way every man and woman could be made right with God and his followers want to do the same.

To understand this better just imagine that the town you live in was hit by a devastating tornado. Your home was demolished and you were living in your car which had survived total damage. The state declared your town a disaster area and set up relief funds to help. To get these funds, a way was set up to apply. You needed to call a certain phone number, and have an agent come out to access the damage.

One of your neighbors told you that there were five ways you could get this help. You tried all of them and nothing worked. But another neighbor told you the one phone number you needed to call to get the right agency that could help you. Which neighbor was a true friend to you? Was the one who told you the truth arrogant and exclusive?

If men and governments set up certain ways and systems for obtaining something like emergency funds, would it be reasonable to say that God might do the same?
