PART 2 - IT IS FINISHED - An Introduction

By Colleen Donahue

As Jesus was just about to breathe his last breath on the cross, Matthew, Mark and Luke record that He shouted his last words and John tells us that He said, "It is finished."

These three English words are translated by one word in Greek -- telelestai. It is a word that is a victor's shout. It can be translated several ways....

A. It is made an end of.
Jesus took our sins and the guilt that accompanied them and made an end of them.

B. It is paid.
Jesus paid the price for our redemption.

C. It is performed.
Jesus did what was needed to fulfill the righteous requirement of the law.

D. It is accomplished.
Jesus had done all that the Father had given him to do.

Jesus had prayed before the ordeal of his death had even started, "I brought glory to you here on earth by doing everything you told me to do." John 17:4 (NLT)

Jesus had finished his work and He was going home! God's plan for restoring man to his original place of fellowship with Himself was complete. No other sacrifice would ever again be needed.

Part 2 of this course will focus on what God's plan put in place FOR us and how we can appropriate it. We'll start by looking back at what God's original plan was for us. Then, we'll see what we lost when Adam and Eve chose to disobey.
