You Don't Need to Cross the River Alone

The Country Gallants by John George Brown

"For I am the Lord your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, 'Do not fear; I will help you.'" Isaiah 41:13

Two friends are traveling through the woods when they come to a river too wide to jump across. The only way over is a narrow log. One quickly goes across and stands looking back at her friend - too fearful and timid to take a step. Isn't that how life goes? For one person, starting a new job or taking the next step is easy. But for another, that same challenge is met with fear and anxiety.
Now look how the whole picture changes when the two "country gallants" arrive. All their attention and focus is on this timid traveler. One goes before her and one behind. They not only surround her, but they hold her. Their mission is to get her across- safe and dry. The boys are so confident and sure they do not need to watch their own feet. The pleasure of God is felt with the sun shining through the thick forest and splashing the colors of fall onto the water. Helping another is a beautiful thing.

Do you know that this is the very picture of Jesus in your life? He is your "country gallant" - surrounding you and holding your hand. He is the one helping you to cross the river even if you have to do it afraid. The timid girl keeps her eye on the friend ahead of her. Looking down, she'll lose her balance. So too, you must keep your eye on Jesus. Don't look down, don't look around or you'll lose your peace - your balance. Just look at Jesus and hold His hand. His mission is to get you across!
