DAILY DISCIPLINE #28
by Colleen Donahue
"Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."
Psalm 90:12
One Sunday evening early in December 1988 I woke about 1:30 a.m. to the worst crash of lightning and thunder I have ever heard. I sprang from my bed to watch the trees in front of my house bending like match sticks. The light of Monday morning showed the havoc that had landed in my city. Only one mile from my home, buildings had been demolished and roofs of houses everywhere ripped off. A few people were dead and hundreds were homeless.
One week later, the earth rumbled in Russia and over 5,000 people suddenly ceased to live. In minutes, massive cities had been reduced to rubble and ruin.
Another week later I flew to England to spend Christmas and found London in shock. Two commuter trains had just crashed head-on killing over 40 people innocently riding into the city to spend their usual day at work.
Two weeks later there was more devastation when Pan Am Flight 103 blew up in mid-air over Lockerbie, Scotland. Not only did the entire flight die (over 250 people) but the plane crashed into the village killing 22 people simply relaxing in their own homes.
Can we really believe that we are in control of our own destiny? We like to think so, but facts like those I've just mentioned prove otherwise. Not one person who died had any inkling in the morning that they would be dead by night. So the question that must concern you and me now is...
