Two men have been companions in a night of drinking. Light now pours
into the little window on the left. They have shared a bottle and it's gone. One glass has been knocked to the floor
while the other sits empty. These are working men. Their clothes are
common and drab and they wear the wooden shoe of the Dutch or Belgium
farmer.
One man is passed out on the table. The other man still sits up but
must support himself with the table and by holding one leg. His eyes are
glazed, staring into space. Even though the day is beginning they will
miss it. The dark night has carried them into deeper darkness. The
bottle sits in the center of the picture. It's been the focus of their
lives for this night and is left standing empty.
Often the central interest of our life is just as empty. We count on
it to bring some happiness or meaning but it can leave us
drained and dead. What are you putting at the center of your life? It
may look full and meaningful in the morning but by night it might be as
empty and insignificant as an empty bottle.
Our Creator made you and I for Himself -- with a definite
purpose. It's only as we choose to fulfill this purpose
that we will be filled and satisfied. Seeking for your life's meaning
and purpose needs to begin by asking your Creator. It can't
and won't be found anywhere else.
"For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand,
that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:10
