"Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you." Deuteronomy 4:2
When I began to read the Bible daily I started to venture out of the familiar ground of the New Testament and into the "Old" starting with Genesis. The more I read and reread, the more the historical accounts of life and death, battles and settlements, men and women and God's role in all life became not only interesting but practical. One book in particular became my favorite. It's called Deuteronomy and is the fifth book that Moses wrote. It is a summary of the history of the chosen people from the time they left their captive state in Egypt to the point of entering into the "promise land" of Canaan. The book is exciting but best of all very practical for today. (If you haven't read it I'd encourage you to do so.)
Since I have read Deuteronomy many times and spent hours slowly studying it I've noticed one thing repeated like a broken record - "You are to walk in my ways, keep my commands, obey my law .." over and over in different ways the same theme is expressed.
We are to be an obedient people - loving God and obeying His commands. When something is said once in the Bible you can be sure it's important. When it's repeated you know you'd better take notice, but when it's said over and over again we become fools not to take action.
What are God's commands? What are we supposed to obey in today's society? This is our theme for this study. If there are any New Year's resolutions to be made - make it yours to obey God this year as He gives you insights about your own life. All of the commands that you'll look up will be from the New Testament so as not to be confused with Old Testament commands pertaining to a specific people during a specific time period. (This is not to say there aren't any Old Testament commands relevant for today but since space is limited we'll stay in the New Testament.) So let's begin ---

Please note: We have barely scratched the surface of the many commands (over 1,000) in the New Testament. You will never know them all nor is it important. My purpose this month is to make us more aware that our God is a sovereign Lord, demanding and deserving our absolute love and obedience. When we set our hearts to wholly love and obey God then He actually puts His laws in our mind and writes His commands on our hearts (See Jeremiah 31:33).
